Birthday lunch at boathouse. Pork belly was cold and far too salty. Shrimp in the cocktail very small (possibly pre-frozen) and the sauce gluey and straight from a bottle. Plus, a 'tip' was explicitly requested on the written bill. The 'tipping' practice should be resisted, as it is one of the best things about dining in Australia. Bad food, high prices.
Until recently I would have given this restaurant 5 stars, it was in my view the best in Port Stephens. But recent menu changes have been disappointing, and when I asked why dishes such as the tempura prawns and whiting had been removed, I was told rather curtly that the Boathouse had gone gluten-free, and was avoiding "cross-contamination".
